Z-Axis originated in 1997 when assembled for a specific multimedia performance event. Once the participants recognized compatible creative energies, they chose to sustain the effort as a standalone band. Keyboardist Allen Welty-Green, disillusioned with the broader music industry, had already stepped away in the mid-'80s to explore performance art. In Atlanta, GA, he joined choreographer L.E. Udaykee to establish the artistic cooperative Gnosis. The group developed the production Reality Check and tasked Welty-Green with composing its score. To capture the soundtrack he brought in former schoolmate Phillip Hart on drums, bassist Jeff Tyson, and guitarist Mark Baker, marking the birth of Z-Axis. After Reality Check premiered in 1999 the musicians elected to continue the project, issuing the CD Music From Reality Check on Welty-Green’s Gnosis Productions label. Their work blends new age instrumental textures with ethnic fusion prog.
