Zacarias Ferreira entered the world in Canca Arriba, Tamboril, widely recognized as the musical heart of the Dominican Republic. Music filled his childhood thanks to a father and several uncles who performed as semi-professional musicians. Once old enough to chart his own course, he moved to the capital, Santo Domingo, intent on building a professional career. While enrolled at the Conservatorio Nacional he earned a living performing with local bachata ensembles, a path that eventually secured him a five-year engagement with the celebrated group Brugal & Compania. Long committed to a solo trajectory, he issued his first album, Me Libre, on the Discomania label in 1997. The recording earned strong notice and captured a Cassandra Award. Three years afterward his second effort, El Triste, reached stores, securing him a second Cassandra and establishing him as a leading figure in the style. The next year he became the first bachatero invited to appear at the Festival del Presidente, where he shared billing with the likes of Marc Anthony, Marco Antonio Solis, and Los Hermanos Rosario. The United States hosted him for the initial time in 2001; during that brief stay he delivered seventy-seven concerts across forty-eight days. Campesino Records then signed him for his third album, Adios. His earliest Billboard placements arrived later, once bachata gained traction stateside. The 2006 single “La Avispa” and the 2007 release “Dime Que Falto” placed his name on Latin airplay charts, as tropical radio presented one of bachata’s originators to an international audience.
