Biography
Zach Heckendorf crafts compositions that fuse introspective depth with rhythmic vitality, drawing from acoustic players who emphasize groove, folk-pop tunesmiths from the 1970s, and hip-hop attuned to reflection. His lyrics examine existence and personal connections with wit, genuine feeling, and philosophical insight that steers clear of arrogance. A youthful talent who issued his first album before finishing high school, he gained wider notice through the 2014 release Speed Checked by Aircraft and sharpened his approach on 2017’s Artifacts.
Raised in Denver, Colorado, Heckendorf began exploring music at a young age. Guitar lessons started at ten, followed by his initial composition—a fourth-grade piece about the Great Depression. He later joined rock groups with peers, absorbing the energy of pop-punk acts such as Green Day and Blink-182. By sixteen he had become an experienced performer, appearing both alone and with a band while shaping a funk-tinged acoustic approach shaped by Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson; that same year he recorded and put out his debut EP. At seventeen he secured management from Gregg Latterman, whose prior clients included Five for Fighting, Train, and John Mayer, and began opening for the John Butler Trio and Tea Leaf Green. He also delivered a full-length project, The Cool Down, during his final year of high school in 2011. Latterman operated Aware Records and placed Heckendorf on the roster alongside Republic Records, its distribution partner.
Work began on a Republic album, yet differing artistic visions prompted an exit before completion. Undeterred, Heckendorf financed the remaining sessions via crowdfunding and issued the finished Speed Checked by Aircraft independently in 2014. Extensive road work helped the album gain independent traction, notably with “The Garden” surpassing a million streams. He followed with the 2016 EP Up and the full-length Artifacts in 2017. Two singles—“Stronger Than I Once Was” and “Take to the Floor”—appeared in 2020 ahead of a planned fourth album slated for midsummer. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed that date, so he instead pursued the “50 States Livestream Tour,” a sequence of home-streamed performances presented in partnership with venues and businesses nationwide.
