Bassist Zack Lober, raised in Canada yet now based in the Netherlands, has built his reputation on assured playing across post-bop and contemporary creative jazz. Regular sessions alongside saxophonist Chet Doxas have marked his output, which reached a milestone in 2023 when he issued his first leader date, the trio recording NO FILL3R.

Montreal is Lober’s birthplace, and he was immersed from childhood in a household shaped by music. His grandfather Hyman Herman, who arrived from Poland, enjoyed a lengthy career as a drummer and bandleader. After earning a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, Lober performed with an array of figures spanning jazz and pop, among them David Binney, Henry Threadgill, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Ingrid Jensen, Zach Williams of the Lone Bellow, and the Swingle Singers. A sustained partnership with Chet Doxas has yielded the albums Rate of Change, Sidewalk Etiquette, Rich in Symbols, and Rich in Symbols II.

Residencies in New York and Boston preceded Lober’s relocation to the Netherlands, where his schedule balances concerts with teaching. The 2023 release NO FILL3R introduced his own trio, completed by trumpeter Suzan Veneman and drummer Sun-Mi Hong.
