Biography
Born into a lineage of sixth-generation Texans as a honky tonk rocker, Zane Lewis entered the world in Lubbock, a city celebrated for its roster of musicians with Buddy Holly as its standout figure, before spending his childhood in Round Rock north of Austin. His father, a fiddler who fronted a western swing group during college, immersed him early in the sounds of Bob Wills as well as selections from the household collection featuring Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and the Eagles. Over the years Lewis developed an affinity for George Strait along with the southern country rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels, while also absorbing the aggressive guitar-driven style of Van Halen and the steadfast resolve of acts such as U2. He first took up guitar during his time as a Texas Tech student, yet despite habitual private singing he delayed any professional vocal ambitions. After earning an advertising degree, Lewis launched a career in magazine publishing by creating the successful equestrian title Western & English Today, whose sale to a major firm supplied the funds for his 2003 debut album This Town, tracked with musicians from LeAnn Rimes’ road band. The project found regional traction when the title track edged onto the lower reaches of the national country charts and secured limited radio exposure. Its 2008 successor, the self-titled Zane Lewis, arrived on Slant Records under the production guidance of Lex Lipsitz and Brett James.
