Biography
Zorch originated in Boston through the efforts of multi-instrumentalists Zac Traeger and Sam Chown, whose kaleidoscopic approach defined the experimental indie duo’s output. They constructed psychedelic pop tracks from layers of chaos by drawing on an array of tools such as vintage modded keyboards, pedals, and an Omnichord, while Chown’s vigorous drumming anchored the buoyant vocal lines. Early attempts to categorize their sound proved elusive, since keyboard-heavy arrangements set them apart from synth pop and Dave Fridmann productions offered inspiration without placing them within symphonic pop. That same distinctiveness helped the pair gain traction after relocating to Austin, Texas—the live music capital—in 2009, where their striking visual presentation quickly differentiated them from local acts. Subsequent victories in regional music polls and favorable notices in Paste, Spin, and Esquire followed the 2010 release of their debut EP, Captain Bartok. A limited-edition cassette titled Cosmic Gloss/E.M.F. appeared the next year.
