German-language pop/rock trio Zweitfrau achieved widespread commercial recognition in 2007 through the hit singles “Alles Dreht Sich” and “Intensiv,” both of which received extensive video rotation. The group formed in Vienna in 2004, built around the core lineup of vocalist Diana Lueger, guitarist Martin Pauser, and bassist Lex Machat; live shows additionally feature drummer Markus Gradlschnig and keyboardist Piotr Szwarczewski.

Central to the band’s appeal is the striking presence of frontwoman Lueger, who dominates its visual and promotional imagery. Her extensive credits span numerous projects beyond Zweitfrau, most prominently several collaborations in the mid-2000s with Richard Dorfmeister—known for Kruder & Dorfmeister and Tosca—on the G-Stone Recordings roster, which specializes in downtempo electronic productions.

The band issued its first recording, the five-track EP Erstkontakt, in 2005. One track, “Schnitt,” appeared simultaneously as a four-track single that included a notable remix by Dorfmeister alongside Madrid de los Austrias. Activity paused in 2006 while Lueger contributed to goth-rock artist Samsas Traum’s album Heiliges Herz: Das Schwert Deiner Sonne, released the following year. Zweitfrau resurfaced in 2007 via the Warner Music Group maxi-single Alles Dreht Sich.

Issued as a standalone February release, “Alles Dreht Sich” reached the Top 30, yet the band waited until October to unveil the follow-up single “Intensiv.” Supported by an award-winning video, the track climbed into the Top 20 by year’s end. Two months afterward, the independent debut album Rückendeckung appeared on Strange Cat Records and entered the Austrian albums chart at number 32 in its opening week.
