Noskowski took up the violin under Hornziel, and his evident talent soon secured him a place at the Warsaw Music Institute. There he worked with Katski on violin, Moniuszko on harmony, and Ciaffei on singing. He next went to Berlin for further study with Kiel and Wurst. It was during this period that he began to write, supplying his earliest pieces to the “Kurier Warszawski” in the form of music criticism. In his conducting career he led the Warsaw Music Society, the Warsaw Philharmonic, and the Warsaw Opera. His output as a composer was extensive and ranged from the overture “Morskie Oko” and three symphonies to numerous short piano pieces. “Step” stands as the first symphonic poem written by any Polish musician. Both as a pedagogue and as a conductor he exerted considerable influence; among the many musicians he taught were Szymanowski and Pankiewicz.
