Biography
36 operates as the exceptionally productive ambient endeavor helmed by British producer Dennis Huddleston. His output tends toward abstract, melancholic soundscapes that nonetheless retain warmth and approachability. The bulk of these recordings has appeared via his personal imprint 3six Recordings, frequently in restricted runs of cassette, vinyl, or CD, while nearly every title remains accessible in digital formats. Standout entries from the initial catalog encompass Hypersona (2009) and Lithea (2012). Additional full-lengths have surfaced on A Strangely Isolated Place and Past Inside the Present, encompassing joint efforts with Awakened Souls, Black Swan, and zakè—the latter partnership yielding the two-volume Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel. Dreamloops (Suite) (2023) gathered material originally issued on limited cassettes, whereas Trance Anthems for a Sunken Generation (2024) steered 36 toward a noisier, more abrasive aesthetic.
The project first emerged with Hypersona in 2009, after which a cluster of 2010 releases followed, among them Hollow, a sequence of color-titled tapes, and Memories in Widescreen, a title that captures the endeavor’s overarching sensibility. Lithea arrived in 2012 and Shadow Play in 2013. Heather Spa became the initial outing on an external label, A Strangely Isolated Place. Following two further self-released albums—Dream Tempest (2014) and Void Dance (2015)—Seconds & Forever appeared on vinyl through Mystic & Quantum in 2016, while The Infinity Room was issued by A Strangely Isolated Place. The year 2017 also saw Black Soma alongside the self-titled debut of SYNE, Huddleston’s techno alias.
In 2019, Fade to Grey surfaced together with an album of reinterpretations, as well as multiple Dreamloops cassettes. 36 further issued the Black Swan collaboration In Four Parts, marking the project’s debut on Indianapolis-based Past Inside the Present. That same label presented the space-ambient epic Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel (with founder zakè) and Wave Variations in 2020, then The Other Side of Darkness (with Awakened Souls) in 2021. Music for Isolation (Suite) appeared under the artist’s own name that year, and the live recording Weaponised Serenity was released on 9128.live. Releases in 2022 included Symmetry Systems, Colours in the Dark, and Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel II. 36 also delivered The Box, a six-LP collection assembling three early albums plus previously unreleased material.
Dreamloops (Suite), a re-edited and expanded rendering of the prior Dreamloops material, first appeared in 2023 before receiving a vinyl edition from Ba Da Bing the following year. Cold Ecstasy, drawing inspiration from the euphoria of ’90s U.K. hardcore, and the heavily loop-driven Ablyss likewise emerged in 2023. Reality Engine, completing a synth trilogy for Past Inside the Present after Wave Variations and Symmetry Systems, arrived in early 2024. Trance Anthems for a Sunken Generation, an unusually noisy, glitch-filled, and bombastic 36 album, followed in April of that year.
