Biography
JPEGMAFIA crafts rap that blends experimentation with confrontation, directing its edge at both progressive and conservative circles. His incisive rhymes take aim at online racists, hipsters, police, and assorted rock and pop figures, spotlighting cultural appropriation alongside shallow diversity gestures. Straightforward boldness defines his approach, yet a mordant wit runs through the verses, sometimes adopting the vantage of those under fire in ways that blur intent and puzzle listeners. Titles such as "I'll Never Forgive Hipsters for What They Did to Brooklyn" and "I Cannot Fucking Wait Until Morrissey Dies" capture the tone. Productions mirror this rawness through fractured trap frameworks interrupted by glitches and bursts of noise. Multiple tapes and digital releases marked the early 2010s before wider notice arrived with the 2018 album Veteran, followed in 2019 by All My Heroes Are Cornballs. Momentum extended into the 2020s via several EPs that year and the full-length LP!, while the long-planned Danny Brown collaboration Scaring the Hoes surfaced in 2023 and I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU arrived the next year.
Born in New York in 1989 to Jamaican parents, Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks spent childhood years in Queens and Brooklyn before relocating to Alabama at age 13. Following high school he enlisted in the Air Force, with deployments to Iraq and further Middle Eastern sites plus stints in Germany and Japan. Music production began during service, yielding mixtapes and EPs as Devon Hendryx, among them 2013’s The Ghost~Pop Tape. An honorable discharge in 2015 led to a move to Baltimore, where he adopted the JPEGMAFIA name and issued projects including Communist Slow Jams and Darkskin Manson. The 2016 self-released full-length Black Ben Carson appeared alongside The 2nd Amendment, a joint effort with Freaky issued by Los Angeles label Deathbomb Arc.
Hendricks’ shift to Los Angeles allowed Deathbomb Arc to release Veteran in 2018. Its unexpected impact sparked worldwide tours that frequently sold out and a feature on Denzel Curry’s TA13OO. November brought the Kenny Beats collaboration “Puff Daddy.” A batch of singles followed in 2019, among them “The Who,” “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot,” and “Awake” with Tkay Maidza. September saw All My Heroes Are Cornballs, his first project to reach the Billboard 200. Late 2020 introduced EP!, the initial entry in a two-part EP series, with EP2! arriving early the next year. October 2021 brought his fourth album LP!, issued simultaneously as an “Online Version” for major streaming services and an “Offline Version” for less regulated platforms.
The 2023 collaboration Scaring the Hoes with Danny Brown peaked at number 84 on the Billboard 200 and ranks among JPEGMAFIA’s most praised works. Follow-ups included the redveil single “black enuff” and the EP Scaring the Hoes: DLC Pack. Production contributions appeared on Armand Hammer’s We Buy Diabetic Test Strips and on 2024’s Vultures 1 by Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign. August 2024 marked the release of I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU, a rock-leaning set featuring Denzel Curry and Vince Staples.
