Biography
New York-based rapper billy woods has earned widespread acclaim for his intricate, bookish lyricism and original delivery, set against daringly experimental beats. The elusive figure routinely conceals his features in promotional images and releases every project through his independent imprint, Backwoodz Studioz. Early solo work surfaced in the first years of the 2000s, followed by contributions to the supergroup the Reavers and the duo Super Chron Flight Brothers, yet broad notice arrived only with the 2012 solo album History Will Absolve Me. Since then his visibility has grown steadily, marked by near-annual full-lengths. Among the strongest received are 2019’s Hiding Places, made with Kenny Segal, and 2020’s BRASS, made with Moor Mother, alongside repeated joint efforts with E L U C I D under the name Armand Hammer. In 2022 he explored themes of history and religion on Aethiopes and Church; Maps, a 2023 travelogue drawn from his road experiences, arrived the following year.
Originally raised in Washington, D.C., woods spent part of his childhood in Zimbabwe and the West Indies, the son of a Jamaican literary professor mother and a Zimbabwean political-refugee father. After relocating to New York and a short enrollment at Howard University, he entered the city’s underground hip-hop community and began performing in the late 1990s. His first album, Camouflage, appeared as a limited-edition CD-R on Backwoodz Studioz and included several guest spots from Vordul Mega of Cannibal Ox. The Chalice followed quickly in 2004. He next joined the Reavers, whose members also included Vordul Mega, Dom Pachino of Killarmy, Spiega of Monsta Island Czars, and additional contributors; the collective issued Terror Firma in 2005 along with two singles and a mixtape. Super Chron Flight Brothers, the partnership between woods and longtime collaborator Priviledge, began issuing material in 2007. Their opening album, Emergency Powers: The World Tour, contained the single “Dirtweed,” produced by MF DOOM and adapted from an earlier KMD track. Two further Super Chron Flight Brothers projects, Indonesia (2009) and Cape Verde (2010), preceded the duo’s dissolution.
Woods resumed solo activity with 2012’s History Will Absolve Me, which featured Roc Marciano and E L U C I D. Widely regarded as one of his strongest statements, it was succeeded in 2013 by Dour Candy, helmed by Blockhead and boasting verses from Aesop Rock and Open Mike Eagle. That same year Armand Hammer surfaced with the mixtape Half Measures and the album Race Music. Today, I Wrote Nothing appeared in 2015, while Known Unknowns, again largely produced by Blockhead, followed in 2017. Armand Hammer continued with Rome and Paraffin in 2018, the pair regularly trading appearances on each other’s individual recordings.
Hiding Places, again with Kenny Segal, and the solo Terror Management, carrying contributions from Mach-Hommy and Pink Siifu, both arrived in 2019. Armand Hammer’s Shrines and woods’ BRASS collaboration with Moor Mother were released in 2020. The following year brought Haram, Armand Hammer’s joint project with the Alchemist, to strong critical response. Two additional woods albums emerged in 2022: Aethiopes, crafted with Preservation and centered on the history of the Black diaspora, and Church, produced by Messiah Muzik and devoted to questions of faith. Maps, issued in 2023 and again produced by Segal, was composed amid an intensive touring schedule and included appearances by Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, and Samuel T. Herring.
