Biography
Shabazz Palaces emerged as an intellectually provocative and elusive art-rap project orchestrated by Palaceer Lazaro, the pseudonym of rapper and producer Ishmael Butler. Avant-garde jazz, funk, and dub fuse within the sound to create an absorbing atmosphere, as Butler’s science fiction motifs and terrestrial reflections balance intellectual weight with playful wit alongside commanding vocal technique. As the inaugural hip-hop signing to the trailblazing independent label Sub Pop, the ensemble unveiled its first album, Black Up (2011), an effort hailed for establishing a singular identity apart from prevailing acts and from Butler’s prior innovative outfit Digable Planets. The follow-up, Lese Majesty (2014), featured denser sonic textures, reached the upper tier of the Billboard R&B/hip-hop chart, and earned placements on multiple year-end rankings. Two simultaneously released 2017 concept albums, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines, arose from separate recording sessions and explored technological interdependence. Long committed to collaboration, Butler assembled the project alongside percussionist Tendai Maraire, who participated through the initial Quazarz installment, while production responsibilities have consistently been shared with Erik Blood. Additional vocalists featured by the group include Butler’s son Lil Tracy, who appears on both The Don of Diamond Dreams (2020) and the Robed in Rareness EP (2023). The 2024 EP Exotic Birds of Prey stands as one of the outfit’s most pronounced science-fiction-oriented releases.
Based in Seattle, Shabazz Palaces first surfaced in 2009 via the independent issuance of the self-titled and Of Light EPs. Neither Ishmael Butler, previously recognized in the early 1990s as Butterfly of the Grammy-winning Digable Planets, nor percussionist Tendai Maraire, son of mbira master Dumisani Maraire, received billing on these recordings. Absent press materials, promotional imagery, interviews, or social media activity, the EPs nonetheless drew acclaim from local outlets for surpassing the intensity of Digable Planets while extending that collective’s tradition of inventive lyricism. Both releases also appealed to Sub Pop, prompting the Seattle rock institution to sign the duo in 2010 and issue the debut album Black Up in 2011. Knife Knights, the enduring collaborative alias of Butler and Erik Blood, received production credit for the LP, while uncredited backing vocals came from THEESatisfaction, who became Sub Pop’s second hip-hop signing that same year. Butler and Maraire contributed to their labelmates’ AwE NaturalE in 2012.
Following the 2014 release of an LP by Maraire’s Butler-assisted Chimurenga Renaissance, Shabazz Palaces delivered Lese Majesty later that year. The album attained the number-ten position on the R&B/hip-hop chart, twenty-eight places above the prior effort, and entered the Billboard 200 at number 58. The subsequent release, Live at Third Man Records, captured a 2015 performance in Nashville’s Blue Room and appeared in 2016, shortly before Butler rejoined Digable Planets for touring. Beyond one Adult Swim track and participation in Woke’s contribution to the same singles series, no new Shabazz Palaces material emerged during this interval. In 2017 the collective presented Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines and Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star, two albums issued together that trace a celestial traveler confronting terrestrial hardships. Two years afterward, Butler and Erik Blood issued Knife Knights’ 1 Time Mirage through Sub Pop. The Don of Diamond Dreams, the group’s fifth album, arrived in 2020, juxtaposing interstellar imagery and intricate boasts with tributes to Butler’s wife and daughter. Butler inaugurated the Glass Cane label in 2023 with Illusions Ago, an EP featuring inaugural signee Lavarr the Starr. Later that year Sub Pop issued the woozy Robed in Rareness EP, positioned as the first installment in a projected series and featuring Lavarr, Lil Tracy, and Royce the Choice. In March 2024 the ensemble continued with Exotic Birds of Prey, an EP marked by cybertronic experimentation and appearances by Purple Tape Nate, Japreme Magnetic, Cobra Coil, and further guests.
