Biography
Prolific hip-hop artist Oddisee first earned notice in underground circles as a producer before establishing credibility as an MC. His thoughtful, accessible rhymes confront intimate struggles and political subjects, while his beats blend retro-soul textures, go-go rhythms, and gospel touches. Released in 2008, the album 101 marked Mello Music Group’s inaugural full-length and featured guest spots from Flying Lotus, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Phonte, and additional contributors. He maintained a brisk schedule of vocal and instrumental projects, turning to live instrumentation on soul-rooted efforts such as 2015’s The Good Fight. Co-billed with his backing ensemble Good Compny, the 2017 concert recording Beneath the Surface preceded his first studio album in six years, To What End, which surfaced in 2023.
Born in Washington, D.C., to a Sudanese father and an African-American mother, Amir Mohamed spent his childhood in Maryland amid soul and rap alongside a wide array of musicians from both sides of his family. He originally planned to enroll at the Art Institute of Philadelphia for visual arts, yet a friend’s introduction to hip-hop production altered his path; captivated, he redirected his energies toward beatmaking and secured placement for the track “Musik Lounge” on DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2002 album Magnificent.
As a member of the Low Budget crew alongside fellow D.C.-area MCs and producers Kenn Starr, Cy Young, and Kev Brown, Oddisee issued his solo debut Foot in the Door, mixed by Jazzy Jeff, on Halftooth in 2006. He joined Mello Music Group in 2008, opening with 101 and following it in 2009 with Mental Liberation plus the Trek Life collaboration New Money. That same year he formed the trio Diamond District with labelmates XO and yU; their debut In the Ruff also appeared. He routinely delivered one or two solo albums annually, among them instrumental collections such as Traveling Man and Odd Seasons as well as lyric-driven sets such as People Hear What They See.
Tangible Dream and the instrumental full-length The Beauty in All both arrived in 2013. Social commentary and retro-soul drive powered The Good Fight in 2015, while 2016 yielded the all-instrumental mixtape The Odd Tape alongside the free-download EP Alwasta. Early in 2017 he returned to a vocal emphasis with his eleventh studio album, Iceberg. Later that year he released the live album Beneath the Surface featuring his band Good Compny. The EP Odd Cure, addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, inaugurated the artist’s Outer Note Label in 2020. The reflective full-length To What End, spotlighting guests such as Bilal, Freeway, and Olivier St. Louis, appeared in 2023.
