Defying prevailing currents among his rap contemporaries, Brooklyn native Kota the Friend chooses musically dense instrumentals and imaginative, at times dreamlike lyricism rather than the standardized trap aesthetics favored by many peers. His introspective songwriting and jazz-tinged production merged with polished craftsmanship on the 2020 album Everything. Beyond additional studio releases such as 2022’s MEMO, Kota has regularly posted installments of his visual series Lyrics to GO and issued four volumes of music drawn from those episodes. He has also joined forces with producer Statik Selektah for a pair of albums, 2021’s To Kill a Sunrise and 2023’s To See a Sunset.

Born in Brooklyn in 1992, Kota began his musical journey on trumpet at age eight and deepened his engagement with production during high school. He appeared in several bands and served as cinematographer on independent artists’ video projects before launching his solo career via three singles in 2017. His approach fused jazzy foundations with R&B inflections across beats that referenced successive eras of hip-hop. The 2018 debut full-length Anything featured guest spots from Hello Oshay, Childish Major, and Angel Haze.

Early acclaim and media attention arrived swiftly, yet Kota committed early to remaining independent and rejected multiple major-label offers over subsequent years in favor of a D.I.Y. path that preserved greater artistic autonomy. He issued the FOTO mixtape in 2019, then the concise Lyrics to GO, Vol. 1 in 2020, sourced from his YouTube series. His second studio album, Everything, arrived in May 2020; its bright, summery sound and distinctive sequencing formed one of his strongest releases to date in both critical response and commercial performance. A second volume of Lyrics to GO, featuring the single “Pomegranate,” appeared in 2021 alongside the Statik Selektah collaboration To Kill a Sunrise.

Lyrics to GO, Vol. 3, a 22-minute project longer than either prior installment, surfaced in 2022, followed by the full-length MEMO and the single “Red Lights.” In 2023 Kota delivered Lyrics to GO, Vol. 4 and the second Statik Selektah joint To See a Sunset. After a deluxe edition of the album emerged, he released the singles “Hope You Heal” and “Barcelona” featuring Samm Henshaw.
