Pop-oriented vocalist and songwriter Marc E. Bassy has blended genres freely without concern for radio categories ever since surfacing in the late 2000s alongside 2AM Club. His independent path gained traction during the 2010s through the albums Gossip Columns (2017) and PMD (2019), the former anchored by a platinum-certified duet with G-Eazy titled "You & Me." Issued as the inaugural project on his own New Gold Medal imprint, PMD marked his exit from Republic. Subsequent solo releases include the Bowie EP (2021) and East Hollywood 2 (2022). Additional credits as songwriter and featured performer encompass sessions with Pia Mia and Lecrae.

Prior to adopting Marc E. Bassy as his professional name, Bay Area native Marc Griffin began his recording activity inside 2AM Club. The Los Angeles-based ensemble delivered What Did You Think Was Going to Happen? via RCA in 2010. Griffin soon pursued solo and songwriting avenues, achieving notable strides in 2014 when he dropped his debut mixtape under the Marc E. Bassy moniker and co-authored "Fight for You," which Pia Mia and Chance the Rapper recorded for the Divergent soundtrack. After signing with Republic, he issued the East Hollywood EP near the close of 2015 and achieved his first platinum single in 2016 with "You & Me," again featuring G-Eazy. That track anchored the Groovy People EP and also appeared on Gossip Columns; both Groovy People and Gossip Columns reached the Billboard 200.

Following the 2018 EP Postmodern Depression, Bassy parted ways with Republic and established New Gold Medal the subsequent year to release PMD, his second full-length album. Guest appearances alongside Lecrae, Young Bae, and Cheat Codes, together with intermittent lead singles, paved the way for the Bowie EP in 2021. East Hollywood 2 arrived the next year as a vocal-free follow-up to the 2015 project sharing that title.
