Biography
Gallant, an artist working in alternative R&B, stands out through his remarkable falsetto, emotionally charged storytelling, and fluid command of diverse production approaches. His first full-length project arrived as the Grammy-nominated Ology in 2016, after which he delivered increasingly intimate and articulate efforts including Sweet Insomnia in 2019, Neptune in 2021, and Zinc. in 2024. In the interval between the final two of those releases, he joined Terrace Martin for a concise, self-titled album issued under the name sneek.
Born in Maryland, Christopher Gallant studied at New York University before moving to Los Angeles after completing his degree. During 2013 and 2014 he issued a succession of moody solo singles on his own as well as the EP Zebra. After catching the attention of Jake Udell, who manages EDM acts Krewella and ZHU, Gallant aligned with David Dann’s Mind of a Genius imprint, a Warner Bros.-backed outlet that issued the 2015 tracks “Open Up,” “Talking in Your Sleep,” “Learn to Fly” (a Foo Fighters cover), and “Weight in Gold.” Consistent with his prior material, these recordings framed his expressive voice against deep bass lines and muted strata of percussion and keyboards.
Ology, his debut album, appeared in 2016 alongside the single “Skipping Stones,” co-produced by Adrian Younge and Stint and featuring guest vocalist Jhené Aiko. The project reached number 39 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart and earned a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Further singles and joint ventures over the ensuing years culminated in the 2019 full-length Sweet Insomnia, which included guest appearances by Sabrina Claudio and 6LACK.
Thereafter operating independently, Gallant issued the self-released EP Neptune in March 2021, which featured Brandy, Arin Ray, and VanJess. In 2023 he partnered with Terrace Martin on his most organic work to date, released under the duo alias sneek. The November project was led by the single “311!,” which spotlighted trumpet from Keyon Harrold and keyboards from Robert Glasper. Gallant recorded his third solo album chiefly with Latin Grammy-nominated producer Ariza (Camilo, Dua Lipa, Lalah Hathaway) and contributions from Stint, Biako, and Ralph Castelli. The resulting set, Zinc., surfaced in September 2024. Containing a duet with Nao, the album continued to dissolve genre lines through airy and propulsive rhythms that nodded toward rock and drum’n’bass while remaining rooted in R&B.
