R&B performer Ro James distinguished himself through tougher songwriting choices and a fuller vocal timbre than most peers in his field. He first established an independent audience before achieving wider success via the 2015 single “Permission.” That slow jam fused vintage early-seventies soul textures with trap-informed beats, earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance, later received platinum certification, and served as the centerpiece of his debut album Eldorado, which arrived in 2016. Based in New York City, the singer-songwriter issued his second RCA full-length, Mantic, in 2020.

Born Ronnie James Tucker in Stuttgart, Germany, as the child of a military veteran, he divided his childhood among New York, Indiana, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Texas. A significant breakup during his time in Indianapolis spurred him to compose and lay down his first song, despite having played drums since the age of nine without earlier interest in a music career. Encouraged by friends, he issued three self-released four-track EPs—Coke, Jack, and Cadillacs—by the close of 2013, each showcasing introspective yet confident R&B; Asher Roth and Snoop Dogg contributed guest verses across the set.

After signing with RCA, James made his major-label bow in 2015 with “Permission,” a collaboration involving Soundz and Verse Simmonds. The Willie Hutch-sampling track climbed to number 37 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart, prompting the May release of Eldorado, which reached number eight on the corresponding album chart. Between that project and Mantic, he dropped the 2018 EP Smoke and several preparatory singles; the 2020 album included joint tracks with labelmate Miguel (“Too Much”) and Brandy (“Plan B”).
