Biography
Known for the casual pink attire he routinely donned during studio sessions, the Philadelphia-born singer and songwriter David Bowden performs under the name Pink Sweat$. He specializes in understated R&B ballads built almost entirely around voice and guitar. After initially concentrating on material for other performers, he issued his first recordings in 2018 and later put out collections such as the 2020 EP The Prelude with the goal of forging a durable emotional bond with audiences. His first full-length project, Pink Planet, appeared in early 2021 and entered the Billboard 200; it was succeeded by the 2022 album Pink Moon along with additional EPs, among them Volume 3 in 2023.
From an early age Bowden displayed musical aptitude, mastering drums and maintaining a regular singing practice. Growing up in a religious family, he avoided secular sounds until his late teens, after which he immersed himself in an expansive range of styles. His professional entry came through work as a demo vocalist and songwriter at Philadelphia’s historic Sigma Sound Studios. Lacking any initial ambition to record his own material, he contributed songs to Rosie Bondz, Natalie Imani, Aaron Camper (including the 2016 single “Guns and Roses”), and Tierra Whack (notably the 2017 single “Child Please” and 2018’s “Pretty Ugly”).
Following a grueling three-year battle with a rare esophageal condition, Bowden decided to retain his compositions for himself and secured a digital distribution agreement with Human Re Sources. He debuted on record as Pink Sweat$ in July 2018 via the stark, emotionally direct ballads “Honesty” and “No Replacing You,” which stood apart from prevailing commercial R&B. Both tracks were included on his first EP, Volume 1, released that November. The equally concise Volume 2 followed in March of the next year. Over the subsequent two years he issued a series of singles, among them the 2020 ballad “17” and the upbeat “Ride with Me.” While awaiting completion of his debut album, he released the interim EP The Prelude in July 2020, drawing from tracks already prepared for the larger project.
Pink Planet reached stores in February 2021 through Atlantic Records and peaked at number 133 on the Billboard 200. After appearing alongside HONNE on “What Would You Do?,” Pink Sweat$ issued his own single “I Feel Good” later in the year. In January 2022 he delivered the follow-up album Pink Moon, which included contributions from 6LACK, Blxst, Tori Kelly, and additional guests. That October he released the standalone track “Lay Up N’ Chill” featuring A Boogie Wit da Hoodie. Volume 3, another EP, arrived in August 2023 and contained the song “Run Through Fire.”
