Evidence has remained a reliable presence in West Coast underground hip-hop ever since Dilated Peoples emerged in the mid-'90s. His measured, plainspoken microphone style aligns with a production approach built on sturdy, no-frills beats that unfold further with repeated listens. Five albums have resulted from his work with Dilated Peoples, among them the Billboard Top Ten R&B/hip-hop releases Expansion Team and Directors of Photography. His solo output has proven equally extensive and collaborative, routinely featuring production from Alchemist and guest spots from established MCs. In addition to the proper albums issued between The Weatherman LP in 2007 and Unlearning, Vol. 1 in 2021, he has released multiple beat tapes and related projects. His production contributions to other artists include a placement on Kanye West's The College Dropout, which brought a Grammy nomination during the earlier stages of his career.

Born Michael Taylor Perretta in Los Angeles' Venice neighborhood, Evidence spent his youth on skating and graffiti until neighbor and producer QD III, the son of Quincy Jones, introduced him to hip-hop recording methods. While still in high school in 1992, he and MC Rakaa formed Dilated Peoples, later completed by DJ Babu of Beat Junkies. A project recorded for the Epic-distributed Immortal label remained unreleased, after which the group issued its first single on ABB in 1997 and then delivered four albums for Capitol between 2000 and 2006. Expansion Team reached the Top Ten on Billboard's R&B/hip-hop chart, and the UK Top 40 hits "Worst Comes to Worst" and "This Way" followed. Evidence also worked as a guest MC and producer during this period, most prominently co-producing "Last Call" for Kanye West; the parent album The College Dropout earned an Album of the Year nomination in 2004. He launched his color-themed beat tape series with Yellow Tape Instrumentals and compiled Another Sound Mission, Vol. 1, spotlighting the Alchemist, Prodigy, and Defari.

The Weatherman LP arrived in 2007 as Evidence's first solo album proper. Dilated Peoples members appeared alongside Phonte, Big Pooh, and Slug, while Alchemist supplied the majority of the beats and Jake One and DJ Khalil contributed additional tracks. The ABB release entered Billboard's Independent Albums chart that March and was followed later in the year by Red Tape Instrumentals and Stormwatch. Further interim releases such as The Purple Tape Instrumentals and the Layover EP preceded Cats & Dogs in September 2011. The album initiated his ongoing partnership with Rhymesayers Entertainment, featured Alchemist, DJ Premier, Raekwon, and Roc Marciano, and reached number ten on the R&B/hip-hop chart plus number 64 on the Billboard 200. Three years afterward, Evidence and Alchemist formed Step Brothers for Lord Steppington, with Evidence serving as primary MC and assisting on one production. Dilated Peoples returned after an extended hiatus with Directors of Photography. Following additional side projects, Evidence assembled Weather or Not with Rapsody, Jonwayne, and others; the January 2018 release addressed personal matters including his partner's cancer diagnosis and treatment.

By the close of the 2010s, Evidence had added production credits for CookBook, Madchild, Defari, and Brother Ali as well as individual tracks for Domo Genesis and Masta Ace. The activity extended into the following decade, culminating in the June 2021 release of Unlearning, Vol. 1. Production duties were shared with Alchemist, Nottz, Daringer, and Sebb Bash, while Boldy James, Conway the Machine, and Fly Anakin appeared as featured artists.
