Biography
Hailing from Oxnard, California, the commanding rapper and inventive producer Oh No has built an expansive body of work consisting of both vocal-driven and purely instrumental hip-hop albums. Though he inherits his older brother Madlib’s habit of mining obscure records and weaving together sounds from countless styles, Oh No tends to favor more straightforward structures, tuneful arrangements, and immediate appeal. Early guest spots on projects by longtime associates Lootpack and Declaime paved the way for his Stones Throw debut, the 2004 album The Disrupt. Two years later he assembled Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms entirely from Galt MacDermot recordings, while his first all-instrumental effort, 2007’s Dr. No’s Oxperiment, drew on Mediterranean psych-funk sources. Later projects mined Ethiopian music, the soundtracks of Rudy Ray Moore’s Dolomite films, and the catalog of the reissue label Now-Again Records. Oh No forms half of the duo Gangrene alongside producer and rapper the Alchemist; the pair issued their fourth album, Heads I Win, Tails You Lose, in 2024. Additional joint ventures have paired him with Prince Po, Blu, and Tha God Fahim. In 2023 he reworked the catalog of Roy Ayers for the instrumental release Good Vibes/Bad Vibes, and the same year he and Madlib, recording as the Professionals, delivered their self-titled album.
Michael Woodrow Jackson grew up in a household steeped in music. His father, Otis Jackson Sr., sang soul, his mother, Dora Sinesca Faddis-Jackson, wrote songs, and his uncle Jon Faddis played jazz trumpet. Alongside his brother Otis Jackson, Jr.—better known as Madlib—he began creating hip-hop while still young. The nickname Oh No the Mischievous Rebel was given to him by Wildchild, Madlib’s Lootpack colleague. Oh No appeared on the group’s acclaimed 1999 album Soundpieces: Da Antidote! and issued two singles with Kali Wild. His own first single, “Check It Out,” featuring Kazi and Wildchild, came out in 2002 on the German label Hum Drums. After producing and guesting on material by Murs, Wildchild, and Declaime, he signed with Stones Throw and released The Disrupt in 2004. The following year he handled production for Grand Agent’s Under the Circumstances, then returned with his second album, Exodus into Unheard Rhythms, in 2006. Built solely from Galt MacDermot samples, the record included contributions from Posdnous of De La Soul, Aloe Blacc, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox. Several limited-edition promotional mixtapes also surfaced during this period. Dr. No’s Oxperiment, his inaugural instrumental album, arrived in 2007 and drew its loops from Turkish, Lebanese, Greek, and Italian pressings.
In 2009 Oh No issued his second instrumental set, Dr. No’s Ethiopium, on his own Disruption Productions imprint, this time sampling Ethiopian jazz, funk, and psychedelic rock from the 1960s and 1970s. Around the same time he formed Gangrene with the Alchemist; the duo signed to Decon and delivered the 2010 EP Sawblade—pressed on blade-shaped vinyl—followed by the full-length Gutter Water. A 2011 collaborative EP with Roc Marciano, Greneberg, preceded Gangrene’s second album, the psychedelic-tinged Vodka & Ayahuasca, in 2012, along with the EP Odditorium. Ohnomite, Oh No’s first solo project in three years, sampled Rudy Ray Moore’s Dolomite soundtracks and featured MF Doom, Guilty Simpson, and Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest; an instrumental counterpart, Dr. No’s Kali Tornado Funk, appeared alongside it. That same busy year also saw the release of Ashes with Chris Keys and Stereo Jr., Oh No’s remix treatment of Strong Arm Steady’s Stereo Type.
Disrupted Ads opened 2013 with appearances by Rapsody, Souls of Mischief, and Chali 2na of Jurassic 5. Oh No vs. Now-Again 2, the follow-up to an earlier beat tape drawn from the Now-Again catalog, surfaced on the label itself. He also produced most of Chaotik Stylz’s The Subliminal Substance. Animal Serum, a joint album with Organized Konfusion’s Prince Po, arrived in 2014, while Gangrene’s third full-length, You Disgust Me, followed in 2015. The same year the duo issued Welcome to Los Santos, a collection of music created for Grand Theft Auto V that expanded into indie rock, synth pop, and dancehall and included Earl Sweatshirt, Wavves, Phantogram, Vybz Kartel, and others. Early 2017 brought Ultimate Breaks & Beats, constructed from samples of the classic breakbeat compilation series, and 3 Dimensional Prescriptions, a collaboration with Tri State released by Hiero Imperium. Oh No vs. Now-Again 3 also appeared that year. In 2018 he teamed with Pounds448 for the EP Borgata.
Nature Sounds issued the 2019 Blu collaboration A Long Red Hot Los Angeles Summer Night, while This Thing Called Life, an EP with Fokis, appeared separately. Early 2020 marked the debut of the Professionals, Oh No and Madlib’s first joint album; Madlib supplied the production while Oh No handled most vocals, with additional verses from eLZhi, Chino XL, and Adub. A deluxe edition included the bonus 45 “The Next Day” with Freddie Gibbs. The instrumental full-length OFFAIR: Dr. No’s Lost Beach emerged in 2022. Returning to Nature Sounds in 2023, Oh No released Berserko with Tha God Fahim, the Roy Ayers-sourced instrumental Good Vibes/Bad Vibes, and Heavy Vibrato alongside eLZhi. Gangrene’s Heads I Win, Tails You Lose marked their first album in nearly a decade when it arrived in 2024.
