Biography
Active since the mid-'90s, Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson established himself as a steady presence in the local scene after logging extensive time and gaining admiration from both hardcore street emcees and forward-thinking producers. He initially recorded within a larger crew before securing broader recognition through tracks helmed by off-kilter producers such as Dabrye, Four Tet, and Detroit's J Dilla, who ranked among his most vocal supporters. J Dilla contributed production to the 2008 solo debut Ode to the Ghetto, alongside Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib. Throughout the following decade Simpson reinforced his reputation via frequent guest spots, mixtape appearances, and full-length projects including the 2015 release Detroit's Son.
Born Byron Gardner Simpson, he first rapped under the name Guilt during the '90s before adopting Guilty Simpson. In the mid-'90s he sharpened his singular delivery as part of the Detroit hip-hop brigade Tha Almighty Dreadnaughtz. The crew issued numerous self-released and limited-edition projects whose independently pressed albums and mixtapes remain scarce beyond the Motor City. His official introduction arrived via Jay Dee, who placed him on "Strapped," a cut recorded for Champion Sound (2003), the joint album Jay Dee made with Madlib. Positioned at the forefront of a fresh wave of Detroit MCs in the mid- to late 2000s, Simpson received numerous guest calls from Detroit and other Michigan artists, among them Dabrye (Two/Three), Jay Dee (The Shining, Ruff Draft), Monica Blaire (Portraits of Me), and Black Milk (Popular Demand) across 2006 and 2007. In late 2006 he signed to L.A.-based Stones Throw Records, a label home of Jay Dee, who had urged the company to bring him aboard before passing earlier that year. Following his appearance on the label's Chrome Children compilation and tour, Simpson focused on his solo debut while also preparing a collaborative album with MC/producer Black Milk and Boot Camp Clik lyricist Sean Price. In March 2008 he issued the solo debut Ode to the Ghetto, which carried beats from Madlib, Mr. Porter, Black Milk, and additional contributors. Madlib served as the sole producer for the 2010 project OJ Simpson. In 2011 Simpson formed Random Axe alongside Sean Price and Black Milk, releasing the group's self-titled debut album that year. A year later he appeared on the underground crew Quakers' 2012 self-titled LP, and in 2015 he partnered with Quakers member and producer Katalyst for the album Detroit's Son. Subsequent years brought several smaller releases that preceded his next full-length effort. In 2018 he dropped the MED-assisted mixtape Loyalty, then months afterward issued Carved from Stone, a mini-album pairing six new tracks with their instrumental counterparts.
