Pioneering a blend of spiritual themes and hip-hop energy, the Oakland pair Zion I established themselves on the Bay Area circuit through lyrics centered on unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. MC Zumbi and DJ/producer Amp Live fuse hip-hop and trip-hop beats, yet their sound draws equally from trance, drum'n'bass, and reggae, rendering the music at once mystical and elusive. Although the duo is based in Berkeley, Zumbi and Amp Live first connected in Atlanta, which further distances their work from any narrow West Coast classification.

The two launched Zion I in Oakland, California, in 1996 and initially issued several self-released cassettes. Early momentum arrived through opening slots for De La Soul, Rakim, and Run-D.M.C. Ground Control Records issued their debut album, Mind Over Matter, in May 2000; the set incorporated earlier cassette and single material alongside appearances by Bay Area rappers Rasco, Planet Asia, and the Grouch, and it remains the only Zion I release to feature DJ K-Genius, who departed shortly afterward. Their follow-up, Deep Water Slang, was slated for 2002 on Nu Gruv Alliance, yet the distributor’s closure postponed the project until 2003, when Raptivism Records reissued it as Deep Water Slang V2.0. The revised edition yielded multiple singles and videos and achieved greater commercial reach than the debut.

A series of self-released mixtapes on Live Up Records preceded the third album, True & Livin’, which surfaced in 2005 and included guest spots from Talib Kweli, Aesop Rock, and Del tha Funkee Homosapian. Break a Dawn arrived first in Japan in 2006 before receiving wider international distribution. That same year the duo joined the Grouch for the Om Records collaboration Heroes in the City of Dope. Additional mixtapes and guest contributions on projects by Ty, CLP, and DJ Deckstream followed, leading to Take Over, Zion I’s first Gold Dust Media release, in early 2009; Brother Ali and Devin the Dude appeared on the record. Atomic Clock followed in 2010 on the same label. A second full-length team-up with the Grouch, Heroes in the Healing of the Nation, emerged on Z & G Music in 2011, while Shadow Boxing appeared on Live Up Records in 2012. The pair then concentrated on EPs, issuing The Vapors in 2013, The Masters of Ceremony and Libations in 2014, and The Sun Moon and Stars in 2015. Stephen Gaines, known professionally as MC Zumbi and Baba Zumbi, died on August 13, 2021, at the age of 49.
