Biography
Emerging from Los Angeles in the late 1990s, the West Coast rap duo People Under the Stairs built their reputation around classic hip-hop sampling techniques, beat construction, and lyricism. Longstanding underground stalwarts, the pair occasionally crossed into wider recognition with releases that climbed the charts, among them O.S.T. (2002), Stepfather (2006), Fun DMC (2008), and 12 Step Program (2014). After more than twenty years of activity they delivered Sincerely, The P, the final album before the project came to an end.
The two artists, Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes One), first connected on the outskirts of L.A.’s hip-hop scene at the close of the 1990s. They concentrated on jazzy samples, danceable rhythms, detailed rhyme schemes, and a relaxed sense of humor. Their debut, The Next Step, arrived in 1998 to strong critical notice, followed in 2000 by Question in the Form of an Answer. After earning widespread acclaim and sharing stages with De La Soul, the duo channeled those touring experiences into their next recording. The resulting O.S.T. surfaced in summer 2002, becoming their initial U.S. chart entry when it reached the upper half of the Indie list. Following ...Or Stay Tuned in 2003, they issued Stepfather, their strongest commercial showing to that point; the project featured the singles “Tuxedo Rap” and “Pass the 40” and was supported by an international tour.
During periods between group releases, Turner and Portugal each put out solo work before reconvening for PUTS’s sixth album, Fun DMC, which appeared in late 2008, peaked at number six on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and secured festival appearances at Coachella and Bonnaroo. That record was quickly succeeded by Carried Away. Remaining active below the mainstream radar, the pair continued through the 2010s with Highlighter and 12 Step Program. In 2015 they revealed plans for a tenth full-length project; released in episodic form online under the title The Gettin’ Off Stage, the first installment surfaced that year and its follow-up arrived in 2016.
People Under the Stairs closed their discography with Sincerely, The P in 2019. On January 30, 2021, Turner died at age 43.
