Biography
Hip-hop producer and rapper 9th Wonder advanced from self-made beginnings that centered on unofficial remixes into one of rap’s most consequential beat-makers. His signature approach, built on silky soul loops paired with commanding basslines, helped shape multiple periods of the genre. Across two decades he contributed to recordings by Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, and numerous other leading figures in hip-hop, R&B, and pop.
Born Pat Douthit in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he played in his school band and practiced keyboards at home during childhood. While enrolled at North Carolina Central University, he initially set aside funds for an MPC, yet a friend demonstrated how a computer could generate the desired sounds, prompting him to adopt that route instead. In 1998 he connected with classmates Phonte and Big Pooh; the three soon assembled Little Brother. Their debut, The Listening, appeared in 2003, after which 9th Wonder gained wider notice for the Nas remix project God’s Stepson, drawn from the 2002 album God’s Son, and for his production on the Jay-Z track “Threat” from The Black Album. Subsequent placements came with Murs, Buckshot, Jean Grae, Destiny’s Child, and Mary J. Blige, alongside Little Brother’s 2005 release Minstrel Show and his own first solo album, Dream Merchant, Vol. 1, issued the same year.
After departing Little Brother in 2007, he supplied beats for Erykah Badu and Sean Price, instructed a hip-hop course at NCCU, and joined Buckshot of Boot Camp Clik for the 2008 album The Formula. Two further joint projects surfaced in 2010: Fornever with Murs and Death of a Pop Star with David Banner. The solo set The Wonder Years followed in 2011, and The Solution reunited him with Buckshot in 2012. Another Murs collaboration, The Final Adventure, also arrived in 2012, while Indie 500 with Talib Kweli dropped in 2015. Occasionally he has delivered verses under the alias 9thMatic.
Beginning in 2016 he launched a run of instrumental beat-tape albums with Zion, a collection of previously unused productions; Zion II appeared in 2017 and Zion III in 2018. Parallel to these releases, outside production remained steady. In 2017 he handled the final track on Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning DAMN. and supplied beats for Rapsody’s Laila’s Wisdom. Later work encompassed tracks for 2 Chainz, Anderson .Paak, Black Thought, Masta Killa, and additional artists.
