4 Non Blondes burst onto the music scene in 1993 when their single "What's Up?" climbed the charts, only to fade from view soon afterward. The quartet came together in 1989, featuring Linda Perry on vocals, Shaunna Hall on guitar, Christa Hillhouse on bass, and Wanda Day behind the drums. Early live performances and airplay on KUSF drew interest from major labels, yet those companies struggled to find the right way to promote the band. Following Day's departure and the arrival of drummer Dawn Richardson, Interscope Records finally offered a deal, leading to the 1992 release of Bigger, Better, Faster, More?. Hall played on several tracks and helped shape some material but exited prior to the album's launch, with Roger Rocha stepping in for live dates. Led by Perry's piercing vocal style, "What's Up?" gradually gained traction on modern rock radio before breaking into broader audiences and reaching number 11 on the Billboard Top 200. Its accompanying video gained heavy rotation on MTV, driving worldwide sales past six million units. At the Bay Area Music Awards, the track earned Best Song honors while Perry took Best Female Vocalist and the album itself claimed Best Album. The group shared stages with Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and Bob Dylan, and also contributed songs to the soundtracks of Wayne's World 2 and Airheads. Perry ultimately grew dissatisfied with the band's pop direction and chose to exit. She issued her first solo project, In Flight, in 1995. After parting ways with Interscope in 1998, she put out her next album, After Hours, on her own Rockstar Records imprint.
