Hailing from Melbourne, Merril Bainbridge achieved instant stardom across Australia via her debut single "Mouth." The track reached the summit of the charts, where it remained for more than a month, and led to the creation of her double-platinum album The Garden. Born in the late '60s, Bainbridge started performing with cover bands during her teenage years. After several years, she transitioned into providing backup vocals, trading her services for recording time alongside Siew, who would eventually serve as her producer. Under contract with Australia's Gotham label, she dedicated more than twelve months to tracking her first album, which came out toward the end of 1994. Initial lack of interest gave way as radio stations repeatedly aired "Mouth," propelling it to the number one position by the start of 1995. By 1996 she had inked a deal with America's Universal imprint, which issued The Garden stateside that September, though it fell just short of charting. In 1998 she delivered Between the Days.
