Biography
After the Cardigans achieved worldwide success in 1997, their singer Nina Persson began an experimental side venture alongside Niclas Frisk of Atomic Swing. The pair formed A Camp and laid down several tracks at once, yet the effort was set aside once Persson rejoined the Cardigans for touring behind their fourth album, Gran Turismo. Persson relocated to New York City by 2000 alongside Nathan Larson of Shudder to Think, who would later become her husband. A Camp restarted work at that point, bringing Larson into the group and enlisting Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous to produce.
That autumn the trio headed to upstate New York to capture their debut self-titled album. Having previously handled guitar in Shudder to Think, Larson chose bass for the sessions, while Frisk assumed the guitar parts. The resulting quirky and melodic style found strong favor in Sweden, earning the album four Swedish Grammys. A Camp then entered another lengthy hiatus, remaining inactive for more than five years before regrouping in 2007 to begin a follow-up. Drawing influence from David Bowie and 1960s girl groups, they completed Colonia within twelve months, scheduling it for release in early 2009.
