Busch began violin lessons under his father's guidance and matriculated at Cologne University upon turning eleven. He also worked closely with Grüters and Reger. In Vienna he led the Konzertverein orchestra while simultaneously teaching violin at Berlin's Hochschule für Musik. In 1913 he established the Konzertvereins-Quartett; following the war's disruption the ensemble was reconstituted in 1919 as the Busch Quartet, which continued performing across Europe and the United States until his death. He likewise created the Busch Chamber Players and the Marlboro School of Music in Vermont. Although widely admired in recital, his most significant work lay in directing and playing within chamber ensembles. A precise technician, he rejected flashy or shallow renditions and instead pursued lucid, unadorned readings of even the most complex scores. His ensemble earned particular recognition for clarifying the late Beethoven quartets at a time when those works were still widely regarded as nearly impenetrable. He was likewise an influential instructor whose pupils included Yehudi Menuhin.
