Biography
One of the foremost violinists of the twentieth century, Leonid Kogan never attained the broad international visibility of his somewhat older Russian contemporary David Oistrakh, yet he stood on equal artistic footing. His tone was more focused and his vibrato faster than those favored by Oistrakh and other members of the Russian school, reflecting a deliberate embrace of modern sensibilities. By adopting the four-octave scale in daily practice, he fortified the strength and accuracy of his left hand in the highest registers and thereby secured an unerring technical command. Though he lived only to fifty-eight, the recordings he left behind constitute a formidable testament to his artistry.
Kogan’s parents possessed no special musical background, yet their son developed an intense interest in the violin by the age of three. Lessons began at six with Philip Yampolsky, a former student of Leopold Auer. After the family relocated to Moscow when Kogan was ten, he continued his training under Abram Yampolsky, another Auer disciple unrelated to Philip. He advanced through the Central School of Music before entering the Moscow Conservatory in 1943, completing his undergraduate studies there in 1948 and remaining for postgraduate work until 1951.
At twelve, Kogan played for Jacques Thibaud, who immediately foresaw a major career. His parents, however, declined to market him as a child prodigy. He therefore made his formal debut at seventeen and appeared frequently throughout the Soviet Union while still completing his education. International notice arrived in 1947 when he shared first prize at the Prague World Youth Festival. Four years later he captured the top award at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels; Oistrakh, serving on the jury alongside Thibaud, thereafter treated Kogan as a peer, and Kogan regularly attended his elder colleague’s evening classes.
Following several seasons of teaching at the Moscow Conservatory and performing extensively inside the Soviet Union, Kogan made his initial visits to Paris and London in 1955. These were succeeded by a South American tour in 1956 and a United States tour the following year. Less outgoing than Oistrakh, Kogan received comparatively restrained promotion from Soviet authorities when performing abroad. He was designated People’s Artist in 1964 and awarded the Lenin Prize in 1965.
