Biography
Renowned as a leading Italian violin virtuoso, Salvatore Accardo commands particular authority over Niccolò Paganini’s output while maintaining equal command of an expansive range of works written for the instrument. His interpretations feature a taut, visceral tone combined with a disciplined interpretive stance that steers clear of excess. Having built parallel careers as conductor, chamber musician, and instructor, Accardo ranks among the most significant and influential musical figures of his era.
Although born in the northern Italian city of Turin, he moved to Naples as a teenager to train at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, where at age thirteen he first performed Paganini’s demanding Caprices—an event that initiated a lifelong connection to that repertoire. Further studies followed at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Victories at the 1956 Geneva Competition and the 1958 Paganini Competition in Genoa propelled him into a sustained international career encompassing solo engagements with major orchestras and frequent recital appearances. His programs encompass every Paganini violin composition, Bach’s solo partitas, nearly all standard concertos from the Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods, and numerous contemporary scores.
Several composers have written expressly for him, among them Walter Piston’s Fantasia for violin and orchestra, Iannis Xenakis’ Dikhthas, and Franco Donatoni’s Argot. Landmark recordings in his catalogue include the first complete cycle of Paganini concertos, Max Bruch’s full body of music for violin and orchestra, and Bach’s complete sonatas and partitas.
In 1968 Accardo established the Italian Chamber Orchestra, serving as its founding conductor; he subsequently directed I Musici and, from 1994 onward, the Orchestra del Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He helped create the Accardo String Quartet, the Walter Stauffer Academy—where he regularly conducts master classes—and the Cremona Academy for string players. In 1987 he issued the volume L’arte del violino.
