Biography
From the mid-1980s onward, Frank Peter Zimmermann has earned acclaim as a premier violinist, distinguished not merely by his exceptional technique and insightful interpretations but equally by his versatility in embracing an extensive array of musical works spanning from Bach through to modern-day creators. He harbors a particular affinity for the compositions of Mozart and Prokofiev, delivering performances of their music that have garnered worldwide praise despite their contrasting stylistic approaches. His repertoire also encompasses the traditional concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, alongside solo and chamber pieces from Bach, Debussy, and Ysaÿe. Furthermore, he has explored innovative territory through engagements with pieces by Ligeti, Matthias Pintscher, and additional present-day composers. In 2021, together with pianist Martin Helmchen, he released the second installment of their Beethoven violin sonata series on the BIS label.
Born in Duisburg, Germany, on February 27, 1965, Zimmermann displayed remarkable talent early on, commencing violin studies at age five and presenting his initial orchestral performance at ten, featuring Mozart's G major Concerto, K. 216. His victory in the 1976 Youth Makes Music Competition in Germany marked an early achievement. His instructors included Valery Gradov at Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Saschko Gawriloff at the Berlin Staatliche Hochschule, and Herman Krebbers during private lessons in Amsterdam. Zimmermann began his professional journey in 1983, delivering well-received recitals throughout Germany and various European regions. The subsequent year saw his American debut alongside the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, followed by appearances in coming seasons with the Boston, Chicago, and National Symphony Orchestras, as well as performances across South America, Japan, and Australia.
Initially, he frequently partnered with pianist Alexander Lonquich for chamber music, yet from 1998 onward, his regular collaborator has been pianist Enrico Pace. Entering the 2000s, Zimmermann has focused more prominently on modern compositions, including his 2002 recording of the Ligeti Violin Concerto for Teldec and the 2003 premiere of Matthias Pintscher's En Sourdine with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Peter Eötvös. The formation of Trio Zimmermann in 2010, alongside violist Antoine Tamestit and cellist Christian Poltéra, established a group that has become a regular presence in European concert venues and festivals. Together with Martin Helmchen, he toured Europe presenting Beethoven's violin sonatas in full or part to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. Numerous recordings by Zimmermann appear on labels such as EMI, Sony, and Teldec. A 2006 ECM release with cellist Heinrich Schiff features violin-cello chamber music by Bach, Honegger, Martinu, Pintscher, and Ravel. Their Beethoven sonata project on BIS saw the debut volume in 2020 and the follow-up in 2021.
