Augustin Hadelich, a violinist of broad musical interests, interprets repertoire ranging from Baroque solo pieces and guitar-accompanied tangos to newly written concertos. He surfaced in the final years of the 2000s through important prizes and grants, and ranks among the most frequently engaged touring violinists while advancing a substantial body of contemporary works. His discography is extensive and encompasses the 2024 album American Road Trip.

Born April 4, 1984, in Cecina, Tuscany, Italy, Hadelich was raised by German parents who maintained a farm nearby; his father also played cello as an amateur. He began violin instruction at five, simultaneously studying piano, and earned early recognition as a prodigy through lessons with performers visiting the region. Progress halted in 1999 when a fire on the family farm caused severe burns; after emergency airlift to Germany he required a full year of recovery. He subsequently entered the Instituto Mascagni in Livorno, Italy, completed his studies with honors, and gained admission to the Juilliard School in New York. He made the city his permanent residence and became an American citizen in 2014, receiving a graduate diploma from Juilliard in 2005 and an artist diploma in 2007.

A 2006 first-place finish at the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis, together with an emergency substitution for Julian Rachlin at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2008, accelerated his professional trajectory. That same year he issued his debut recording, devoted to violin concertos by Haydn, on the Naxos label.

Thereafter his concert schedule expanded vigorously in both the United States and Europe. Appearances have included the New York Philharmonic (debut 2010), the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, and nearly every other major North American orchestra, along with extensive touring across Europe; in 2019 he was appointed Artist in Association with the NDR Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany, for a three-year term. Musical America named him Instrumentalist of the Year in 2018.

During the 2010s his recordings appeared on several labels, most frequently Avie. A decisive advance occurred with his 2018 signing to Warner Classics, which produced a widely praised account of Paganini’s 24 Caprices. He continued with a 2019 album pairing the Brahms and Ligeti violin concertos, followed in 2020 by Bohemian Tales, a collection of Czech music. Further releases comprised Bach’s unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas in 2021 and the Spanish-inflected recital Recuerdos the next year. Warner Classics returned with American Road Trip in 2024.
