Biography
Emerging at just 18 years old, Los Angeles rapper Ahmad Ali Lewis broke through in 1994 via the relaxed rhythm of “Back in the Day.” The track’s scenes of playground antics and junior-high awakening cast his South Central surroundings in a nostalgic, idyllic glow. A remix carried the single to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 that summer, propelled by the artist’s melodic, storytelling flow that echoed Pharcyde’s Fatlip. The hit earned gold certification from the RIAA for his self-titled debut album. Ahmad subsequently assembled the jazz-rap collective 4th Avenue Jones, which put out multiple releases in the early 2000s. After resuming his studies, he earned a sociology degree from Stanford University and established himself as a personal-development speaker and writer. He also penned songs for LMFAO and Flo Rida before returning to the forefront in 2010 with The Death of Me, his second album and debut release on the WeClap imprint.
