Biography
Mark Wahlberg, the younger sibling of Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block, stepped into music during the early 1990s before shifting focus to a second career in film. Cast as a Calvin Klein underwear model, he released two albums that failed to shake his reputation as a fashion face for white rap, despite the Funky Bunch lineup—comprising DJ Terry Yancey and five mixed-gender dancers—consisting entirely of Black performers. Rapid success arrived with “Good Vibrations,” which incorporated a sample from Loleatta Holloway’s disco track “Love Sensation,” reaching the top of the U.S. charts in July 1991 while entering the U.K. Top 20. The follow-up single “Wildside,” an adaptation of Lou Reed’s urban mantra “Walk on the Wild Side,” climbed into the Top Ten, and the accompanying debut album Music for the People earned platinum certification that same year. A sophomore effort generated minimal commercial impact, and by the mid-1990s Marky Mark’s presence on the Billboard charts had concluded, much like that of New Kids on the Block. Reverting to his given name, Mark Wahlberg built a thriving acting career that later extended into production, including the hit cable series Entourage.
