Although documentation exists for nearly every garage rock act that ever considered cutting a single, numerous short-lived disco and funk groups from the 1970s have left almost no trace. Ahzz counts among those ensembles about which scant information survives. An eight-minute gliding, shimmering dancefloor instrumental packed with dub-style knob tweakings and a heart-stopping breakdown, “New York Moving” stands as one of the choicest items across the many label catalogs maintained by Peter Brown and Patrick Adams. Issued in 1980 on the producers’ own Land of Hits imprint, the track has stayed available through Counterpoint’s Disco Juice, Vol. 2 compilation, itself—like its predecessor—a survey of Adams’ and Brown’s independent releases.
