In Detroit's electronic dance music community, which flourished from the middle of the 1980s onward, Alton Miller stands out as a key contributor who never achieved the legendary reputation bestowed upon several other local icons. During his upbringing in the Motor City throughout the 1970s, he absorbed influences from Motown, Philadelphia soul, Parliament/Funkadelic, and Santana. Once the dance music enthusiast formed a friendship with a youthful Derrick May in the early 1980s, he took up DJing, drawing inspiration from Chicago figures Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. In the closing years of that decade, Miller collaborated with George Baker and Chez Damier to establish the Music Institute, a fleeting yet iconic Detroit venue that gained near-legendary status partly due to the innovative techno work of artists like May. After the club's closure, Miller pursued Conga drumming alongside his DJ activities, resulting in worldwide tours spanning 1989 to 1991. He renewed his association with May, initially working at the Transmat label before issuing tracks under the Aphrodisiac moniker. His output included an EP for the Transmat-related Fragile imprint, material on Kevin Saunderson's KMS, and multiple EPs via Serious Grooves. Throughout the mid- and late 1990s, he expanded his local visibility with various Detroit DJ sets while putting out records on esteemed labels including Carl Craig's Planet E, Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves, and Distance.
