Biography
Born in 1937, Robinson passed away on 24 January 1989. Working as a session guitarist based in New Orleans, he scored a modest 1964 hit by recording Chris Kenner’s ‘Something You Got’. The track appeared on Tiger Records, the short-lived label run by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who subsequently moved Robinson to their follow-up imprint, Red Bird. His opening single for that company, ‘Down Home Girl’, fused New York pop with Crescent City R&B to striking effect. The Rolling Stones later recorded the number, which ranked among the label’s strongest releases. A reworked rendition of ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ appeared next, though Robinson never repeated his earlier success. He shifted to the west coast in 1969, joining other transplanted New Orleans players on Dr. John’s Gumbo, a tribute to the city’s musical heritage. Robinson came back to New Orleans in 1985 and remained there until his death.
