Biography
Hailing from Britain, Amusement Parks on Fire have earned recognition for an emotionally charged style that blends noise-pop with shoegaze textures. Fronted by Michael Feerick, the ensemble first attracted attention through its 2004 self-titled debut and the 2005 follow-up Out of Angeles. The musicians have sustained a singular identity via layered combinations of guitars and synths, evident on the 2010 release Road Eyes and the 2021 album An Archaea.
The project originated in Nottingham, England, during 2004 as the solo endeavor of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Feerick. Before turning 20, Feerick composed and tracked the debut album entirely by himself; the resulting self-titled record appeared that year on Invada Records, the label operated by Geoff Barrow of Portishead. He soon assembled a performing ensemble and issued Out of Angeles in 2006, portions of which were captured at Sigur Rós' Sundlaugin Studio in Álafoss, Iceland. During the same period the group joined noise-rock outfit Scarling for a co-headlining tour and issued the EPs Blackout, In Flight, A Star Is Born, and Young Fight.
Road Eyes, the third studio album, arrived in 2010 after sessions in Los Angeles overseen by Michael Patterson. The track "Flashlight Planetarium" featured a contribution from Brian Aubert of Silversun Pickups. Stepping away from Amusement Parks on Fire, Feerick joined forces with Micah Calabrese of Giant Drag to create the duo Young Light, which released the EPs Great White Arc and Blank Dice.
Amusement Parks on Fire resurfaced when Feerick delivered the 2017 EP All the New Ends alongside a European tour. A further EP, Thankyou Violin Radiopunk, appeared the following year. These efforts preceded the June 2021 arrival of the band's fourth full-length, An Archaea.
