Biography
With a distinctive blend drawing from electronica, noise pop, post-punk, and shoegaze, Autolux came together in Los Angeles during 2000. Singer and bassist Eugene Goreshter first encountered Carla Azar, previously the drummer for Ednaswap, while they worked together on music for Dario Fo’s play Accidental Death of an Anarchist; once former Failure guitarist Greg Edwards joined, the three performed live for the first time that summer at the Silverlake Lounge. After issuing their self-produced EP Demonstration in spring 2001, the band joined T-Bone Burnett’s new DMX imprint and started developing songs for what would become their debut album.
Progress halted temporarily in May 2002 after Azar tumbled off a stage and broke her elbow, though an experimental operation using eight titanium screws allowed her full recovery. The trio finally began recording in November, finishing basic tracks by early 2003, yet they spent more than twelve months adjusting the mixes before Future Perfect reached stores in October 2004. Critics responded favorably, and Autolux toured in support of Secret Machines and Nine Inch Nails while appearing at festivals such as Coachella and the Vincent Gallo-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties. When Burnett’s label shut down, the group transferred to TBD Records and kept performing and writing; several of those new pieces surfaced on their second album, Transit Transit, issued in summer 2010.
After completing their initial European tour, Autolux went to Tokyo in 2011 for a second All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. That same year saw the digital EP The Bouncing Wall/Census. In 2015 the band signed with Danger Mouse’s Columbia Records imprint 30th Century Records, and “Change My Head” appeared on the label’s inaugural compilation later that year. A few months afterward they released their third album, Pussy’s Dead, in April 2016.
