The Danish pair the Raveonettes merge the jagged, abrasive textures of noise pop acts such as the Jesus and Mary Chain with tuneful strains rooted in 1950s rock & roll and 1960s girl groups. Although anchored to earlier eras in both sound and image, the duo willingly refreshes their signature vintage approach—first defined on early releases including 2003's The Chain Gang of Love—through touches like new wave synths and hip-hop drum patterns. Even when later projects explore surf styles (2014's Pe'ahi) or openly identify their sources (2024's covers album Sing...), the pair remain faithful to their shadowy, menacing aesthetic.

Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner spent years attempting to assemble a group, journeying through New York City, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and an island near Seattle in pursuit of compatible players. A longtime admirer of Bob Dylan, he also valued Buddy Holly's compositions and the Everly Brothers' vocal harmonies, yet the abrasive qualities of Sonic Youth and the Jesus and Mary Chain finally spurred him toward a professional music path. His time in the United States proved unsuccessful, prompting a return to Denmark, where he met bassist/vocalist Sharin Foo, an enthusiast of the Beatles and the Velvet Underground who had explored qawwali and Hindustani classical music over a six-month period overseas.

After forming, the Raveonettes established strict guidelines for their debut recording: everything would be tracked in B-flat minor using only three chords, every track would run under three minutes, and ride cymbals would be prohibited. These unusual constraints produced the hazy, shadowy, filmic collection Whip It On, which paired instantly memorable melodies with heavy layers of distortion. The album appeared in Europe in 2002 via Crunchy Frog; shortly afterward the band performed at CBGB's in New York City, where producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, the Go-Go's) witnessed the set and agreed to helm their follow-up.

The Raveonettes signed with Columbia Records, and their debut full-length The Chain Gang of Love arrived in September 2003. Its lead single "That Great Love Sound" achieved modest success, aided by a disquieting clip in which Foo and Wagner plot each other's demise. Work on the subsequent album commenced in late 2004; Wagner discarded every prior compositional and production restriction along with guitar distortion, favoring instead traditional craftsmanship and abundant, spacious reverb. The resulting 2005 release Pretty in Black included appearances by Suicide's Martin Rev, Ronnie Spector, and the Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker. In early 2008 the duo reverted to a stripped-down aesthetic on Lust Lust Lust, issued the next year with In and Out of Control, both on their fresh imprint Vice. Their fifth studio effort, the synth-driven new wave-styled Raven in the Grave, contained the track "Forget That You're Young" and surfaced in April 2011.

In 2012 the Raveonettes marked their tenth anniversary by issuing a sixth album, Observator, which reclaimed their noise pop roots. While maintaining a generally discreet presence between projects, Wagner remained active behind the boards for artists including the Dum Dum Girls, Louise Burns, and Crocodiles. The duo also supplied a rendition of "The End" for the 2014 Doors tribute compilation A Psych Tribute to the Doors. Later that year their seventh album, the surf-inspired Pe'ahi, was released. Following another hiatus the pair altered their process for the next undertaking; throughout 2016 they completed one song monthly, with Wagner frequently delivering material to Foo at the last moment. Presented as an anti-album, the tracks were made available for download each month before being compiled as 2016 Atomized in April 2017. After issuing "Ghost" in 2018 the duo paused activity so Wagner could pursue a solo album that ultimately remained unreleased. They reemerged with the single "Snowstorm" in late 2020, resumed touring in 2022, and assembled a set of covers drawn from early influences such as the Cramps, Duane Eddy, and the Everly Brothers. Released by Cleopatra in July 2024 under the title Sing..., the collection coincided with the completion of a U.S. tour.
