Formed in Portland, Oregon, the three-piece Blouse blends atmospheric and propulsive pop, with core members Charlie Hilton, Patrick Adams, and Jacob Portrait, the latter also serving as bassist for Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Hilton, whose detached singing lends the band an ethereal aura echoing Broadcast or Beach House, first encountered Adams at art school in summer 2010; after laying down several home demos, the pair reached out to Portrait and began tracking material inside his warehouse facility. The newly constituted trio uploaded a handful of tracks to Bandcamp, which led to a deal by early 2011 with the atmospheric Brooklyn imprint Captured Tracks. Throughout that same year the group issued multiple singles, among them the March debut 7" Into Black/Firestarter and the May Sub Pop single Shadow. November brought the arrival of Blouse’s self-titled debut album together with the additional singles Videotapes and Time Travel. Returning to the studio in early 2013, the band abandoned the synthesizers central to their debut in exchange for cellos and heavily distorted guitars. The ensuing sessions produced Imperium, issued that September.
