Real Estate contributed to establishing a gentle, atmospheric variety of indie rock that rose to notice in the late 2000s, and the group has sustained a comparable approach even as its perspective has grown more seasoned. Effortless melodies, ringing guitars, unhurried vocals, and an unforced method of crafting songs masked deeper musical layers within standout releases such as the 2014 album Atlas. As time passed, the original roster broke apart while newer material addressed aging, parenthood, and a broader set of subjects, all conveyed through the band’s characteristically reserved and mellow manner on 2020s albums including The Main Thing and Daniel.

The band originated in Ridgewood, assembled by lead singer and guitarist Martin Courtney (Predator Vision and formerly Titus Andronicus), guitarist Matthew Mondanile (Ducktails), bassist Alex Bleeker (Alex Bleeker & the Freaks), and drummer Etienne Duguay (Predator Vision). The four had performed together earlier, including in a Weezer cover band, while still in high school, yet they did not coalesce as Real Estate until Courtney returned to New Jersey after college in Olympia, Washington. Formed in the summer of 2008, the musicians began playing shows that fall and issued the “Suburban Beverage” 7", which presented their surfy, lo-fi pop style, early in 2009. A track on the Underwater Peoples Records Showcase and the Fake Blues EP followed that summer. After touring with Girls in the fall, they released their self-titled debut on Woodsist.

In 2011 the quartet signed with Domino Records for its second album, Days, which appeared on the Billboard 200 at number 52 along with the rock, alternative, independent, and vinyl albums charts. Shortly afterward Duguay departed and was succeeded on drums by Jackson Pollis, while auxiliary keyboardist and guitarist Jonah Maurer joined the lineup. This configuration toured extensively behind Days before Maurer was replaced by Matt Kallman for the 2014 third album Atlas, which climbed higher on the same charts and reached the Billboard 200’s Top 40. Following a brief hiatus for side projects, including Courtney’s solo debut, Real Estate announced in May 2016 that Mondanile was exiting to concentrate on Ducktails; Julian Lynch took his place, and the resulting five-piece—Courtney, Bleeker, Pollis, Kallman, and Lynch—delivered In Mind in March 2017. Three years later the band returned with its fifth studio album The Main Thing, which examined growing older alongside apprehension about an approaching apocalypse. The record was led by the single “Paper Cup,” featuring guest vocals from Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso. Pollis left in 2020, after which the Half a Human EP compiled tracks begun during The Main Thing sessions and completed later. Drummer Sammi Niss replaced Pollis, and this lineup recorded the sixth studio album Daniel, released in February 2024.
