Lockett Pundt, Deerhunter's guitarist and vocalist, launched Lotus Plaza as his own outlet. While the project echoes the hazy experimentalism and shoegaze textures of his main band, along with its flashes of lucid guitar pop, it steers those elements toward the melodic clarity of 1950s and 1960s pop as well as the angular drive of 1980s post-punk. During high school Pundt performed in multiple groups, yet none felt substantial until he encountered Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox at college and became a member. In 2007 he started tracking material under the Lotus Plaza name, handling nearly every instrument on his own inside a bedroom setup that combined a four-track recorder with computer-based tools. The Floodlight Collective, his first album and a title drawn from the earliest band Pundt had joined, appeared on Kranky Records in spring 2009. Three years afterward, once his commitments to Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest tour ended, Lotus Plaza issued Spooky Action at a Distance, an album marked by a leaner, more direct collection of songs.
