Biography
Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, both London residents, launched the Big Pink inside their own home studio. There the pair began fusing the droning soundscapes of Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine with M83’s lush electronics. Furze had already built experience as guitarist for Panic DHH and Alec Empire, while Cordell, founder and owner of Merok Records, spent his days guiding the Teenagers, Klaxons, and assorted other British tastemakers. Once the duo had refined their blend of distorted noise and melodic nuance in the studio, they recruited several friends—including electronic artist Jo Apps and members of Sunn O)))—to translate the material to the stage. The ensuing run of well-received shows prompted NME to label the band “London’s coolest new stars,” prompting the Big Pink to issue a limited-edition single on the House Anxiety label. The duo then signed with influential indie imprint 4AD; after several singles they delivered their debut LP, A Brief History of Love, in September 2009. A little over a year later they assembled the mix CD Tapes for the !K7 label. Their next studio album, Future This, appeared on 4AD in early 2012 and contained the hit single “Stay Gold.” In March 2016 the revised lineup of Furze, Mary Charteris, Free Hallas, and Jesse Russell released the EP Empire Underground through B3SCI Records. Two singles surfaced in 2017, one of them the lush “How Far We’ve Come,” which included a collaboration with Los Angeles band IO Echo.
