Chicago native André Ward, a smooth jazz saxophonist, grew up in that city. At eight years old he began playing the snare drum. From there he advanced to trumpet and tenor saxophone, eventually concentrating on alto saxophone with enough mastery to receive a performance scholarship at Berklee College of Music. Living in Boston, he performed abroad and contributed session work to artists such as Freddie Jackson. Orpheus Music signed him, and in October 2001 he issued his debut solo album, Feelin' You. The project peaked at number four on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart while also charting on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. His next release, Steppin' Up, arrived in March 2004 and enjoyed similar success.
