Biography
Anindo Chatterjee rose to prominence as one of the foremost tabla virtuosos on the global stage, distinguished by his rare capacity to draw pristine melodic lines from the drums. As director of the Farrukhabad Gharana of Tabla originally established by Haji Vilayat Khan Saheb, he has consistently expanded the expressive range of the instrument. Beyond his own recitals and recorded work, he has collaborated with sitar players Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Budhahitya Mukherjee, and Ustad Rais Khan; sarod players Buddhadev Das Gupta and Ali Akbar Kahn; flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia; santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma; and vocalists Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur and Gangubai Hangal. Encouraged by his uncle Pandit Biswanath Chatterjee, he first took up the tabla at age five. After a short period of study under Ustad Afaq Hussain Khan of the Lucknow Gharana, he spent the next thirty years refining his art with Pandit Jnan Prakesh. Honored with the President’s Award in 1970, he became the first table player invited to perform in the House of Commons two decades afterward.
