Biography
A popular entertainer during the 1960s, Anita Bryant gained recognition as a beauty queen, vocalist, Florida citrus spokesperson, and subsequently a campaigner opposing homosexuality. Among the songs that reached charts in both Britain and the United States were “‘Till There Was You,” “Paper Roses,” and “In My Little Corner of the World.”
Oklahoma was her birthplace. Stage appearances commenced when she was six, and a talent contest victory followed at age nine. That success earned her an invitation to perform on Arthur Godfrey’s televised talent program. Thereafter her profile rose rapidly; billed as Oklahoma’s “Red Feather Girl,” she issued her first record, the 1956 single “Sinful to Flirt.”
Crowned Miss Oklahoma in 1958, she advanced to the Miss America pageant and finished third, an outcome credited to her vocal abilities. Her breakthrough chart-topper arrived the next year with “‘Till There Was You” from The Music Man. Three albums appeared on the Carlton label—Anita Bryant, In Your Home Tonight, and In My Little Corner of the World—while 1960 brought another number-one single, Bert Kaempfert’s “Wonderland of Night.” Marie Osmond would later score a hit with Bryant’s “In My Little Corner of the World.”
Columbia became her label in 1962, resulting in both inspirational and mainstream pop releases. Several further albums emerged on the religious imprint Word throughout the 1970s, yet the energetic vocal approach long identified with her remained unchanged.
By the 1980s and 1990s her focus had shifted once more. Although performances continued, she took up advocacy against homosexuality and worked as a motivational speaker. Regular appearances took place at the Anita Bryant Theater in Branson, Missouri, and later at her own venue in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The latter property entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2001. After returning to Oklahoma, she inaugurated the online Christian organization Anita Bryant Ministries International in 2006. Anita Bryant died on December 16, 2024, at the age of eighty-four, though her family withheld public notice of the death for nearly a month.
