Anton Fig gained nightly recognition as the drummer in the studio ensemble directed by Paul Schaffer for NBC-TV’s Late Night With David Letterman. He first sat behind a kit at age four and later trained at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, earning honors upon graduation in 1975. The following year he relocated to New York and began working as a freelance musician, a path that led him, a decade afterward, into Letterman’s late-night ensemble.

Recording sessions soon placed him alongside Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Kiss, Madonna, Gary Moore, Spider, Ace Frehley, Joan Armatrading, and Paul Butterfield, while live appearances found him supporting Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. He also joined Booker T & the $MG’s for the celebration of Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary concert. When Letterman transferred his program to CBS in the late 1990s and rebranded it The Late Show With David Letterman, Fig remained with the group, now known as the CBS Orchestra under Shaffer’s continued leadership. During this period he accompanied Miles Davis, James Brown, Stevie Winwood, and Tony Bennett.

Still sought after for session work, Fig released his own instructional packages through Warner Bros. Publishing. In the Groove presents performances by the Paul Shaffer Band, the Ace Frehley Band, Blondie Chaplin, former Letterman bassist Will Lee, Sid McGinnis, and a “Top Ten List” segment featuring David Letterman; Late Night Drumming offers an edited counterpart drawn from the same material.
