Cellist Antonio Meneses earned widespread recognition for his concerto appearances yet earned his deepest esteem through chamber performances. During the final decade of the Beaux Arts Trio, he served as the ensemble’s cellist.

Born Antonio Meneses Neto in Recife, Brazil, on August 23, 1957, he grew up in a household steeped in music; his father held the position of first hornist at the Rio de Janeiro Opera. Meneses began cello studies at the age of ten. An unplanned encounter with cellist-conductor Antonio Janigro resulted in an invitation to join classes in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, Germany. By 1977 he had captured first prize at the ARD International Competition in Munich. Still broader notice arrived when he secured first prize and the gold medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The next year he made his recording debut for Deutsche Grammophon, appearing alongside violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, conductor Herbert von Karajan, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in Brahms’ Concerto for violin, cello, and orchestra, Op. 102.

Meneses performed as soloist with many of the globe’s leading orchestras. He collaborated frequently with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, while maintaining a strong presence in the Western hemisphere through engagements with the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and numerous South American venues. His stature as a chamber musician may have surpassed the acclaim he received for solo work. From 1998 to 2008 he filled the cello chair of the Beaux Arts Trio throughout its concluding ten years. Additional chamber associates included pianists Menahem Pressler and Maria João Pires; with the latter he toured extensively. Meneses recorded for Avie, Deutsche Grammophon, and Pan Classics. In 2022 Avie issued his album of Brahms cello sonatas and songs, made with pianist Gerard Wyss. Meneses died of brain cancer in August 2024.
