Arthur Maia first picked up drums during childhood before switching to electric bass at age 15. Once he turned professional during the 1980s he toured and recorded behind Jorge Ben Jor, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins, and Gilberto Gil. Additional sessions linked him to Ney Matogrosso on Olhos de Farol, Lulu Santos, Spanish singer Rosana Arbelo, another project with Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso’s Tropicália 2. Within instrumental circles he contributed to Banda Black Rio and joined Cama de Gato, the ensemble with which he has released multiple CDs. In 1986 he joined Gilson Peranzzetta for an album saluting Tom Jobim and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Maia, his debut solo outing from 1990, received the Sharp prize the following year. A live date with Hiram Bullock was captured in 2000.
